Tooth Extraction

In North Palm Beach, FL

What is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a natural tooth from the jaw by a dentist. It is a very common oral surgical procedure, sometimes referred to as “having a tooth pulled.”

There are many reasons why a tooth extraction may be necessary, including:

  • Tooth decay: If a tooth is severely decayed, it may need to be extracted to prevent further infection or damage to the surrounding teeth.
  • Tooth fracture: If a tooth is fractured beyond repair, it may need to be extracted.
  • Gum disease: If gum disease has progressed to the point where the tooth is no longer supported by the bone, it may need to be extracted.
  • Trauma to the mouth: If a tooth is knocked out or severely damaged in an accident, it may need to be extracted.
  • Infection: If a tooth becomes infected, it may need to be extracted to prevent the infection from spreading.

What is the Process for Extracting a Tooth?

A tooth extraction is typically a quick and easy outpatient procedure, except when the tooth is broken, below the surface, or impacted, in which case the process can be much more involved.

In the past, our dentists focused on getting the tooth completely out of the jaw and there was little to no consideration given to bone preservation or future dental implants. However, our dentists now understand the importance of limiting extraction trauma and preserving as much of the surrounding bone as possible.** This helps to facilitate future implant placements.

Before pulling a tooth, our dentists will give you a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth that will be removed. This will help to ensure that you are comfortable during the procedure.

After the tooth has been pulled, our dentists will place a gauze pad into the socket. This will help to stop the bleeding and keep the area clean.** In some cases, our dentists may place a few stitches to close the extraction site.

The recovery time for a tooth extraction varies depending on the individual patient and the complexity of the procedure. However, most patients are able to return to their normal activities within a few days.

If you have any questions or concerns about tooth extraction, be sure to talk to our dentists. They will be happy to answer your questions and help you understand the procedure.

Required Scans for Tooth Extraction

CBCT scans, or cone beam computed tomography scans, are a great help when planning for a tooth extraction or other oral surgery. These 3-D X-rays provide our dentists with a detailed view of the teeth, jawbone, and surrounding structures. This allows them to see anatomical landmarks such as nerves, arteries, bony structures, and sinuses. This information can be used to map out the extraction procedure and avoid damaging any important structures.

If you have any questions about CBCT scans or tooth extraction, please be sure to talk to our dentists. They will be happy to answer your questions and help you understand the procedure.

Anesthesia for Tooth Extraction

Millions of teeth are extracted every year using local anesthetic (Lidocaine) only. However, some people prefer to be sedated for their tooth extraction.

The type of sedation that is right for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Our dentists will discuss the different options with you and help you choose the best one for you.

If you are considering sedation for your tooth extraction, be sure to talk to our dentists. They will be able to answer your questions and help you understand the procedure.

FAQS

Why would I need a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is necessary when a tooth is too damaged to be repaired or if it poses a risk to your oral health. Common reasons include severe decay, advanced gum disease, infection, impacted wisdom teeth, or overcrowding. Tooth extractions help prevent further complications and maintain overall oral health.

Is tooth extraction painful?

Tooth extractions are performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the area around the tooth to ensure you do not feel pain during the procedure. You may feel some pressure, but the process is generally painless. After the extraction, mild discomfort or swelling may occur, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications and ice packs.

How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

Recovery from a tooth extraction typically takes a few days to a week. During this time, it’s important to rest, avoid hard or crunchy foods, and follow your dentist’s instructions to ensure proper healing. Most patients can return to normal activities within a day or two, but full healing of the extraction site may take a few weeks.

What can I expect after a tooth extraction?

After a tooth extraction, you may experience some swelling, bleeding, or mild discomfort. Your dentist will provide instructions on how to care for the extraction site, including keeping the area clean, managing pain, and preventing dry socket (a condition where the blood clot dislodges). You should avoid smoking, using straws, or vigorous rinsing during the healing process.

What are my options for tooth replacement after extraction?

If a tooth is extracted, it’s often recommended to replace it to maintain proper function and appearance. Options for tooth replacement include dental implants, bridges, or partial dentures. During your consultation at Bellagio Dental Implant Center, we can discuss the best replacement option for your specific needs and goals.
